The first event in the Gympie Veteran Centre’s exciting new initiative, the 10-Minute Window, kicks off with surfing lessons hosted by Merrick’s Learn to Surf. This event, held on the stunning Sunshine Coast, offers younger veterans a chance to ride the waves while connecting with peers in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Scheduled for Saturday, January 18, the surfing session is open to veterans of all skill levels—from first-time surfers to those with experience. Professional instructors from Merrick’s Learn to Surf will provide all necessary equipment, including surfboards and wetsuits, and will tailor their guidance to meet individual needs.
This inaugural event is designed to promote physical activity and camaraderie, two of the core pillars of the 10-Minute Window. Veterans will not only learn new skills but also experience the therapeutic benefits of the ocean, which has been shown to enhance mental well-being.
The day doesn’t end with the waves! After the lesson, participants can enjoy lunch at the Gympie RSL Club with guest speakers addressing mental health, physical well-being, and financial management, fostering connections and lasting memories.
The 10-Minute Window initiative is about building a stronger, more engaged veteran community through fitness, education, and shared experiences. Spaces for the surfing lessons are limited, so veterans are encouraged to register early.
Let’s start the year with energy, connection, and a splash!
